TORNADO HITS OHOPE HOLIDAY PARK

Tornado hits Ohope

Tornadoes have torn through the North Island, destroying everything that crossed their path.

Ohope's TOP 10 Holiday Park was a victim of a tornado, with one building "completely blown apart". The Bay of Plenty small town, a short drive away from Whakatane, is renowned for its award-winning safe swimming beaches.

"The devastation to the Surf & Sand venue has been substantial. No one harmed. We will be further assessing the damage this morning and will be contacting all guests that have future weddings and conference bookings with us. To our neighbours affected by the tornado, we can help coordinate cleanup today," the holiday park said in a Facebook post

On the West Coast of the North Island, another tornado ripped New Plymouth apart, causing widespread damage to 30 properties. Taranaki is considered a high-risk area for tornadoes, and MetService believes there is a chance that there could be more in the near-future.

At this point in time, it is believed that no one was harmed by the tornadoes.
