MILLIONS AFFECTED BY DATA LEAK

China’s biggest hotel operator Huazhu Hotels has had data from 130 million customers stolen. The leak is the largest reported data breach in China in five years, with 140GB of data stolen from 13 properties.

A post on a Chinese dark web forum listed the hotels’ booking data for sale for eight bitcoins, worth about NZ$84,000.

Huazhu Hotels Group released a statement on its website saying that the leak is being investigated internally.

“Our group attaches great importance to (the hack) and has quickly carried out verifications internally to ensure the safety of guests' information. Our group has already reported to the public for the first time, and the public security organs are conducting investigations,” said the Group.
