FREEDOM CAMPING IN A CARPARK

Thomas Burns St carpark in Dunedin

Dunedin City Council is trialling an inner-city freedom camping site in a carpark this summer.

A drinking water tap, a sink, recycling bins, portable toilets and signs will all be temporarily installed in the carpark.

“After a recent review of freedom camping in the city, we wanted to trial an inner-city site this summer to help relieve the pressure of growing freedom camping numbers at Warrington and Ocean View,” said Robert West, parks and recreation group manager at the Dunedin City Council.

“After considering various inner-city options, we believe the Thomas Burns Street site is a good place for a trial because it is a non-residential area in a central location and within walking distance of a number of eateries, shops and other local tourism offerings.”

Security contractors will monitor the site at night and council parking enforcement will watch over during the daytime.
