Hotel staff caught cleaning with dirty towels

A whistle-blower has exposed more than 100 upmarket Chinese hotels for not following hygiene protocols when cleaning rooms. The hotels were found using the same towels to wipe drinking cups and toilets.

Huazong, the whistle-blower, released a video where he claimed he spent over 2,000 nights in 147 five-star or luxury hotels, filming the cleaning practices in each property.

At the high-end Conrad Beijing, cleaning staff are seen picking up dirty towels from the bathroom floor and using it to wipe glasses, mirrors and sinks.

At the Bulgari in Shanghai, a staff member was filmed removing a plastic cup lid from the bin, wiping it on their t-shirt and then putting it back on the plastic cup.

Park Hyatt and Shangri-La Hotels both apologised to customers and promised to investigate.

The Beijing Tourism Bureau and Shanghai Tourism Bureau are both investigating the incidents and have stated that if the videos are certified genuine, the staff will face disciplinary action.
