Expedia sued for misleading customer

The Hawaiian beachfront.

A Canberra barrister is suing Expedia after a $300-a-night beachfront shack he booked online turned out to be an old, run-down basement.

The Hawaiian accommodation Hugh Selby had booked for his family on Wotif (travel website owned by Expedia) fell well below the expected standard. Selby complained directly to Wotif but was refused a full refund, and only offered a $150 coupon to use on the website.

Upon the refusal of a refund, Selby took legal action against Expedia for misleading him about the nature of the accommodation.

The ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal sided with Selby, ordering Expedia to pay him $628.34 to cover his booking, as well additionally charges to cover the court fees.
