Operations close after death at Whale Island

A 73-year-old tourist has died while on a guided tour at Whale Island in the Bay of Plenty.

As a result, White Islands Tours—the only tour company on the island—has suspended operations.

“A man suffered injuries from a fall on the island on Thursday 4 April,” said the New Zealand Police in a statement.

“The 73-year-old was provided with first aid before he was flown to Tauranga Hospital where he later died.”

The death is not being treated as suspicious, however, Worksafe New Zealand and the Department of Conservation are also investigating.
