Wains Hotel Dunedin wins 2019 Dulux Colour Awards

Wains Hotel Dunedin was New Zealand’s big winner at the 2019 Dulux Colour Awards. The awards show in Melbourne recognised the Wains Hotel as the Grand Prix – New Zealand winner at the event.

“This contemporary but classic design is in keeping with the historic Victorian-era hotel, described by the architects as ‘a grand old dame with quirks and personality,” commented the judges.

“The subtle use of colour blocking, with soft greys and neutrals on walls to enhance the traditional mouldings, is especially worth noting, as is the choice of Dulux Tuatapere from the Colours of NZ range for the feature wall – a nod to the South Island. Even the clear delineation of curtain lines to define the colour blocks is clever.”

The hotel was designed by luxury interior design studio Yellow6.

On the studio's website, the studio described the hotel as "classic line interspersed with contemporary finishes".

"Sympathetic to its heritage surrounding and location, the iconic Wains Hotel is Dunedin's first true designer hotel. Taking inspiration from the local arts and design community, Wains has been restored to its former glory," Yellow6 continued.

The 48-room hotel is part of CPG Hotels, a privately-owned hotel group with seven hotels across the country.
