April sees rise in guest nights

Guest nights spent in commercial accommodation in April 2019 increased by 5.1 percent in comparison to April 2018.

According to Melissa McKenzie of Stats NZ, this rise was driven by a late Easter holiday.

“Easter falling in April this year meant that guest nights in most regions were higher than in April 2018,” said Melissa McKenzie, accommodation statistics manager, Stats NZ.

Last year’s Easter started in late March, which had the opposite effect on March year-on-year guest nights performance.

However, April 2019 guest nights were also 4.1 percent higher than April 2017, which also included all of the Easter holidays within the month.

The rise in guest nights was driven by Kiwis, with domestic guest nights rising 14 percent in April 2019. Comparatively, international guest nights fell 5.6 percent.
