Canberra’s accommodation sector is set for a boost following an announcement from Australia’s largest hotel operator, Accor, in partnership with hotel owners, Canberra Labor Club, that a new-build Mercure hotel is to open in the city and is now taking bookings.
The five-storey, 125 room Mercure Canberra Belconnen is currently under development at the Canberra Labor Club precinct on Cameron Avenue.
The midscale hotel will adjoin the Club’s precinct, accessible via a connecting walkway, allowing guests access to all food, beverage, and entertainment facilities within the club.
The guestrooms will include plush beds, relaxed workstations, smart TVs equipped with Chromecast, and complimentary Wi-Fi. The hotel will also feature gym and laundry facilities, a spacious lobby lounge, food and beverage outlets, event and conference spaces, and onsite parking.
Designed by May + Russell Architects, the hotel design draws inspiration from the local environment by using colours and textures with a natural undertone while also drawing from some of the vibrant colours within the surrounding landscape.
“All eyes are on the nation’s capital at the moment, which is experiencing a renewed interest amongst investors and developers,” said Simon McGrath, Accor Pacific’s chief operating officer.
“We’re delighted to bring the Mercure brand to Belconnen in partnership with Canberra Labor Club. Accor enjoys partnering with clubs by adding an accommodation offering to their already successful business, by enhancing the existing club’s facilities to the benefit of its members, and also attracting new business and leisure guests.
“We are confident that the Mercure hotel will provide much-needed new hotel supply for Canberra and we look forward to welcoming the first guests to Mercure Canberra Belconnen.”
Canberra Labor Club’s chief executive Arthur Roufogalis also expressed his organisation’s anticipation. “We are really excited to be opening Mercure Canberra Belconnen and are confident the hotel will add to the vibrancy of the Belconnen district with premium accommodation and a large range of facilities, including various cafes and bars both in the hotel and the Canberra Labor Club,” he said.
Mercure Canberra Belconnen is located in the town centre of Belconnen, just 8km from the Canberra CBD. It’s a short stroll from Westfield Belconnen and key government offices and is located within close proximity to the Belconnen business district, Calvary Hospital, and the University of Canberra, as well as the AIS and GIO Stadium.
The Canberra bus network is located at the hotel’s doorstep offering easy access to Canberra’s cultural attractions, and just a short 20-minute drive from Canberra Airport.
