SINGAPORE’S SIX-STAR TOILETS

Bathroom at Marina Bay Sands

The Restroom Association of Singapore has awarded six toilets at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands a six-star rating – the first toilets in Singapore the achieve that status.

The esteemed toilets at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands implement creative uses of technology to maintain their cleanliness. One of the toilets has a detector that measures ammonia levels in the air. When the ammonia levels cross a certain threshold, the cleaners are automatically sent an alert via text, informing them that the toilet needs cleaning.

The toilets also use a rating system akin to ridesharing service Uber. Equipped with smart tablets, users can provide real-time ratings of their experience using the toilet. When negative feedback is received, cleaners will again be informed via text so they can deal with the problem immediately.

The six-star rating was introduced in 2014, but until now no toilet had received the accolade. The technology used in the six-star toilets was provided by Singapore companies Convergent Smart Technologies and Infinergy Systems Solutions.
