REVIEW: TOMB RAIDER

Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander takes over as the adventurous heroine Lara Croft in this tomb raider reboot. A far cry from Angelina Jolie’s original short shorts wearing sexualised version, Vikander adds a sense of realism to the popular video game character.

The film is a prequel to the original films telling the heroines origin story. Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished during her teenage years. Now a young 21-year-old without any real focus or purpose, Croft unknowingly discovers her father’s secret archaeology hideout. This sets in motion the perilous storyline as Croft leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination.

The storyline is predictable and what you would expect from this type of adventure movie. Poor special effects were used throughout the film and the long run time was unnecessary. The saving grace of this film is Vikander. The talented actress brings life to the character and with a better storyline, the film could have been great. I have hope for the inevitable sequel.
