The World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has joined forces with the European Historic Thermal Towns Association (EHTTA) and the Spanish region of Galicia (Axencia Turismo Galicia) to unveil plans for this year's international congress on thermal tourism from 27-29 September 2022 in Ourense, Galicia.
To promote thermal tourism and its benefits, UNWTO and its Affiliate Member, the EHTTA, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
According to José Manuel Baltar Blanco, President of EHTTA, as the world shifts into post-pandemic recovery mode, the rising demand for open-air and nature-based tourism activities is making thermal tourism a key segment for the future.
Galicia is Spain's first thermal destination, followed by Europe in second place.
Thermal Tourism is closely linked to the natural and cultural environment, representing one of the most valuable forms of sustainable tourism. In addition to promoting health, well-being, learning, entertainment and mindfulness, it supports jobs and social opportunity, including in rural destinations.
To help safeguard the world's cultural and natural heritage and provide socio-economic benefits, including revitalising rural areas and creating stable employment and income-earning opportunities, UNWTO is committed to driving thermal tourism.
