The leading hotel company in Spain, Meliá Hotels International, has achieved the highest rating in the global travel industry in the latest S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA). As the world’s most comprehensive annual assessment of the sustainability performance of companies across all sectors, the CSA gave Meliá top ranking with an overall score of 74 points out of 100.
The CSA focuses on economic, governance, social, environmental, and industry-specific criteria with three dimensions of analysis. Meliá has taken part in the assessment since 2018, when it was ranked third in the industry. Out of the three dimensions, Meliá received the highest score in the first two and leads the industry in criterias such as:
- Risk and crisis management
- Environmental reporting
- Climate strategy
- Social Reporting
- Human rights
- Human capital development
- Management of customer relationships
Executive Vice President and CRO of Meliá, Gabriel Escarrer, explained that sustainability is the most important value for Meliá and its companies.
“It is now a key factor in driving our transformation and responding to the demands and expectations of our customers, employees, shareholders and investors, hotel owners, and society in general,” Escarrer explained. “For all of them, we are proud to have once again achieved this recognition as the most sustainable hotel company in the world.”
Meliá has properties throughout Asia and is now one of Vietnam's largest international hotel brands. Properties have embraced core sustainability principles by decreasing or completely eliminating single-use plastics, implementing energy and water conservation measures, generating a more circular food economy, launching collaborations with local organisations, and creating a broad range of CSR programs.
