The Asia Pacific region (APAC) has witnessed a growth in travel demand across all markets. Assisted by the reopening of Greater China, in the first quarter of 2023 the APAC hotel occupancy rate was at 61.7 percent, three percent higher than in 2019, according to the latest data from Amadeus.
Australia and New Zealand are leading the region’s hotel occupancy rate in the region, having been at 64.5 percent in January 2023, to 76.5 percent in March 2023.
Amadeus Head of Commercial for Asia Pacific Hospitality, Maria Taylor said that the company is beyond thrilled by the hospitality resurgence that is currently taking place across Asia Pacific compared to pre-pandemic levels.
“This is a hopeful sign that APAC-based hoteliers may expect a substantial rebound in the long run as travel has picked up its pace, both domestically and internationally,” said Taylor.
Hotel occupancy in Sydney averaged at 85 percent in February and March, whilst Singapore grew on 2019 levels by almost three percent. Hotel occupancy in Tokyo has also reached more than 80 percent, exceeding records during the city’s famous cherry blossom season during the March and April period. Seoul, South Korea, also saw a jump of seven percent from 2019 levels during the same period of time.
Tokyo, Hong Kong, Seoul, Shanghai, and Beijing were the highest regional markets for hotel occupancy during the week of easter, with rates higher than 70 percent.
