Turning Art into Afternoon Tea

Rosewood London’s Mirror Room will be launching Masterful Art - a celebration of the award-winning Art Afternoon Tea series.

Executive Pastry Chef, Mark Perkins first launched the Art Afternoon Tea in 2017 and has firmly established himself as a Master of Art-inspired creations. Drawing inspiration from internationally renowned artists and their London exhibitions, Mark creates unique afternoon teas with an elevated aesthetic appeal and cultural resonance.

Launching on Monday 8th January, and set within the iconic Mirror Room, the Masterful Art collection will include the most celebrated cakes to have featured in the series to date. The carefully curated pastries are tasty mini replicas of some of the most recognisable artworks and sculptures from contemporary Japanese sculptor and installation artist Yayoi Kusama, giant of post-impressionism Vincent Van Gogh, art icon Andy Warhol, enigmatic street artist Banksy and painter David Hockney.

The Masterful Art Cakes will feature:

David Hockney – Bigger and Closer

From the 2023 Art Cakes collection - inspired by David Hockney’s latest immersive exhibition in London, this pastry features white chocolate cream and blueberry sauce set inside a soft madeleine-style sponge cake.

Salvador Dali – Lobster Telephone

From the 2022 Art Cakes collection - inspired by Dali’s 1936 Lobster Telephone, Mark’s sweet recreation is made of a Valrhona Chocolate sponge with a passionfruit jelly insert and garnished with a passionfruit chocolate lobster.

Yayoi Kusama – Flowers that Bloom at Midnight

From the 2021 Art Cakes collection - inspired by Kusama’s ‘Flowers that bloom at Midnight’ (2010), this pastry will evoke images of a midnight sci-fi garden. The cake is made with tropical coconut mousse, strawberry yuzu jelly for a flash of tartness, matcha green tea sponge, strawberry crisps for added texture and an earthy sablé biscuit.

Banksy – Arty

From the 2017 Art Cakes collection - British-born Banksy’s iconic ‘Girl with a Balloon’ - arguably one of his most famous artworks - has provided the inspiration for a delicate white chocolate cube filled with a light vanilla cream choux, salted caramel, and chocolate crémeux.

Vincent Van Gogh – Almond Blossoms

From the 2019 Art Cakes collection - Consisting of flavour profiles emblematic of the classic blossoms Van Gogh painted, the Almond Blossoms cake is comprised of apricot peach compote, along with aromatic jasmine and vanilla bavarois. The cake is coated in a light blue glaze, and then finished with chocolate almond blossom branches.

Andy Warhol – Campbell's Soup Can

From the 2018 Art Cakes collection - Campbell’s Soup Cans - the 1970s staple dessert Black Forest has inspired the flavours for this pastry, which has been designed in the shape of Warhol’s iconic Campbell’s Soup Cans. The flourless chocolate sponge is filled with cherry jelly, chocolate mousse and finished with vanilla crémeux and a bright red glaze.

Alongside the colourful creations, guests will enjoy elements of a traditional British afternoon tea. A selection of delicate finger sandwiches including H. Foreman London Smoked Salmon and Jersey Crème Fraîche on Irish Soda Bread and Truffle Egg Mayonnaise and Confit Tomatoes on Onion Brioche, as well as traditional scones. Diners will also be able to choose from a wide selection of Mariage Frères teas to complement their meal.
