New Tourism Data Later This Year

new tourism data

The Tourism and Hospitality Ministry has recently endorsed a new investment initiative to improve and support the growth of the tourism sector. This initiative will implement new tourism data sourced by the Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment (MBIE).

This project's funding comes from the allocation of $5.08 million International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL). It is one of many initiatives to enhance the tourism data system.

The first of this new data, mainly focusing on domestic tourism, is expected to be made available later this year. It will provide valuable insights into visitor movements, the short-term rental accommodation market, visitor experiences, and community sentiment.

Following recommendations from the Tourism Data Leadership Group, the group's draft Strategic Business Plan will be finalised in April. The plan will contain more information about the group's role in the tourism data system and its desired future outcomes.

“The new data will complement existing tourism data such as the Tourism Satellite Account and the International Visitor Survey and will support, among other things, regions and tourism operators with their business planning and performance reporting," said Amapola Generosa, MBIE’s Manager of Tourism, Evidence and Insights.

MBIE is already in the process of finding suitable suppliers for the new data. A Request for Information (RFI) seeking up-to-date and innovative methodologies and solutions will be open until the 22nd of March. The procurement process will begin after that.
