GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES EXTENSION ON KAIKOURA PAUA CLOSURES

Primary Industries Minister Nathan Guy today announced that the shell fishery closure, which has been in place at Kaikoura and eastern Marlborough since the earthquake in mid-November, will be extended until November 20th. This move was welcomed by the New Zealand paua industry.

“Total closure will give us time to scientifically assess the damage caused by the earthquake,” said Storm Stanley, Chairman of the Paua Industry Council. “This is a shared resource. Its sustainability is important to many and we intend to work collaboratively to find the best way to rehabilitate the fishery
