Tongariro Chateau to be Permanently Closed

Tongariro Chateau’s 30-year lease expired in April 2020, and the building owner, Kah New Zealand, has been negotiating with the Crown to determine its future. As the Department of Conservation was readying to renew the lease, the hotel's infrastructure instability led to its permanent closure. Built in 1929, the hotel has been operating for nearly 100 years.

The hotel underwent site assessments with third-party specialists to decide if it could be renovated. Underground shifts showed that the property no longer met safety standards.

Kevin Peeris, senior vice president of commercials of the Chateau Tongariro Hotel’s parent company, said that the decision has been significantly devastating for the hotel family.

“Bayview International Hotels and Resorts has been destinations in Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, and without a doubt, Chateau Tongariro Hotel is a flagship hotel and has been an iconic destination for international and local visitors.”

The closure directly impacts thirty-six of the hotel’s staff, who are being supported during the transition. In discussions with the Ministry of Social Development, the Ruapehu Mayor works to implement a redeployment response for affected staff.

“Council is saddened by the news and thank KAH New Zealand for their commitment to the region and operating this iconic hotel for more than 30 years,” said Ruapehu Mayor, Winston Kirton. “The chateau has been an iconic part of Ruapehu tourism since its opening in August 1929.”

A spokesperson for the hotel stated that the decision was also influenced by the poor snow season conditions, leading to Ruapehu Alpine Lifts falling into voluntary administration. Moreover, the cost of ensuring the site's safety from long-term seismic risk added to the ultimate decision.

George Taylor, DOC’s operations manager for Tongariro, is thankful towards the hotel’s parent company for their commitment.

“DOC thanks KAH New Zealand for their commitment to the region and operating this iconic for more than 30 years.”
