Changes at the Top for Qantas

Qantas has announced changes to its board of directors as the company continues to hone in on a focused renewal process.

Departing the board is long-time Qantas Director Michael L'Estrange AO, who is planning to retire after his current term ends, which is due to be in November.

Joining the board is former American Airlines CEO and Chairman Doug Parker, who will bring his extensive 35 years of industry experience with him to the group.

Announcing the changes, Qantas Chairman Richard Goyder said that the changes would help to maintain the depth and breadth of experience on the board.

"There are few people with as much experience running airlines as Doug. He's spent over two decades as an airline CEO in North America, including eight years heading up the world's largest airline. The knowledge and perspective he'll bring to the board will be a huge asset as we grow in the years ahead," said Goyder.

Parker will join the board ahead of the 2023 Annual General Meeting, which will be held on the 3rd of November. While he was American Airlines' CEO, the relationship between the two airlines expanded significantly.

"Qantas has always been one of the world's great airlines, and it has come through the pandemic in a very strong position. I'm honoured to be joining the board at a time when there is a lot of momentum, and I look forward to doing what I can to support that," said Parker.

Goyder also said that Michael L'Estrange had made a considerable contribution to the airline over the past seven years, especially during challenging times of the pandemic.

"He is an incredibly diligent director, and, in particular, his insights on international relations and government affairs have been invaluable. We are extremely grateful for his efforts," noted Goyder.

L'Estrange said serving on the Qantas Board during his three terms had been an honour.

"Among the great strengths of Qantas are its clarity of purpose and its people's exceptional dedication and professionalism. Qantas has a very bright future, and I wish it every success," he reflected.

Following the November Annual General Meeting, Qantas will have an eight-member board consisting of four women and four men.
