Accor Announces Surge in Western Australia

Western Australian hotel rooms are in hot demand, according to Accor, who reported a strong recovery for its properties. Its room occupancy level was at 68 percent for its year-to-date review, up 7.5 percent from the same period last year.

Perth is Accor’s second-largest performing city, with a 71 percent average occupancy year-to-date ranking, just behind Sydney. Perth’s occupancy rate was 11.6 percent higher than in 2022.

Accor has 25 properties in Western Australia, and whilst recent business travel to its main centres has been slower to return, domestic leisure travel has been in strong demand. Accor Pacific CEO, Sarah Derry, said that the Western Australian Market recovery has been supported by such impacts as increased airline capacity and the recent FIFA Women’s World Cup, for which the group reported hotel occupancy as nine percent higher than usual in Perth during the event.

“We have seen the power of sporting events such as the FIFA Women’s World Cup to generate travel, but Perth also benefited strongly from major conventions such as the World Indigenous Tourism Summit in March,” said Derry.

The largest Agritech conference in the Asia and Pacific region, evokeAG 2024, is expected to support Perth’s hotel occupancy next year as well, as the city prepares to host the event. There are also other sporting and entertainment events that will greatly benefit the state’s accommodation sector. An example of this was the upcoming Coldplay concerts planned for Perth, which saw a spike between 50 percent and 63 percent for the concert dates.

Derry added that the global profile of Perth is set to rise even further, with the announcement of various airlines adding services between Perth and Auckland, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Manila, and Jakarta.

“These are significant wins for Western Australia as a tourism destination and show major airlines' confidence in Perth.”

Accor Pacific has announced that it will roll out its Sustainable Tourism Certification programme within Western Australia across all of its properties. The programme is in a strategic partnership with Ecotourism Australia.
