Nokken and BIG have unveiled a game-changer for luxury hospitality and sustainable living.
Nokken, a pioneer in adaptable architectural solutions, has announced the launch of the Nokken x BIG Softshell. This semi-permanent structure has been designed to meet the evolving needs of the hospitality and residential markets.
Created in collaboration with world-renowned architects BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group), the Softshell will redefine the future of sustainable, experience-led accommodations.
Combining architectural elegance with practical versatility, it has offered a visually stunning and environmentally responsible alternative for eco-resorts, glamping sites and boutique hotels.
With global hospitality trends shifting towards eco-friendly, experiential travel, this Softshell has launched at a pivotal moment. It has challenged the conventional offerings in the tent and yurt market and elevated the concept of mobile accommodation.
“The Nokken x BIG Softshell is a response to the growing demand for adaptable, low-impact structures that harmonise with their surroundings,” said Nathan Aylott, Creative Director of Nokken.
“In collaboration with BIG, we’ve created a structure that offers design elegance and the flexibility to adapt to various environments, be it a forest retreat, desert lodge, or even a pop-up venue for seasonal events. It’s more than just a structure—it’s a way to elevate the guest experience while prioritising sustainability.”
The Softshell stood out in the market due to its innovative combination of lightweight timber framing and a recyclable canvas made in Spain. This approach allowed the structure to be easily transported and assembled in remote locations while providing the stability and aesthetic appeal of a permanent building.
Using eco-friendly materials sourced sustainably ensured the Softshell left a minimal ecological footprint, aligning with the increased focus on sustainable tourism.
BIG took a holistic approach to meeting the complex challenges of modern hospitality design. Their expertise in sustainable design ensured that the Softshell met high aesthetic standards and functions as a responsible, low-impact structure.
“We wanted to create something that transcends the typical idea of temporary architecture. It’s a step towards how we can build more sustainably while delivering memorable experiences,” said Finn Nørkjær, Partner at BIG.
As experiential travel has continued to rise, hospitality providers have sought distinctive ways to offer luxury experiences in remote natural settings. The Softshell’s modular, customisable design has made it a perfect fit for glamping, eco-resorts, and boutique hotels. Its flexibility has allowed operators to adapt the structure for various climates and terrains.
“With the Softshell, we’re offering the hospitality industry something that stands apart from traditional tented structures,” said Nokken co-founder James Van Tromp. “
“It merges the design sophistication of permanent architecture with the flexibility of a temporary solution, catering to guests who want to be immersed in nature, but with the design aesthetic and level of comfort they would expect in a luxury hotel.”
With sustainability a central focus in hospitality, the Softshell’s low environmental impact has been one of its key differentiators. Constructed from natural, recyclable materials and designed for minimal site disturbance, the Softshell can be disassembled and relocated without leaving a lasting imprint on the environment.
The launch of the Softshell has marked the beginning of an exciting chapter in Nokken’s Adaptable Architecture Range. Building on the success of this collaboration, they have already been exploring new materials and technologies for future structures.
