One of the things I love most about my role as Founder of RevenYou is meeting accommodation owners from all walks of life.
From first-time buyers to experienced operators, every journey is different, but they all demonstrate the incredible opportunities our industry offers.
Through this Owner Spotlight series, I share the stories of owners who have built businesses, created financial freedom, achieved greater work-life balance and embraced a lifestyle that many people only dream about.
This month, I'd like to introduce Natalie and Michael, whose story is a perfect example of how unexpected opportunities can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
At the time, the couple were busy running a general store, raising young children and building their future. Motel ownership was not part of the plan. Yet when Michael's parents needed help with their motel business, they stepped in temporarily, intending to lend a hand until a longer-term solution could be found.
Twenty-two years later, they were still there.
What began as a favour evolved into a successful motel business, a rewarding lifestyle and a career that provided countless lessons in leadership, resilience and customer service. Their journey is a reminder that some of the best business opportunities are not found through strategic planning. Sometimes they find you.
Michael was no stranger to the accommodation industry, having grown up around motels before training as a chef. Natalie brought extensive customer service experience from roles in both pharmacy and insurance. Together, they discovered that their skills complemented each other perfectly.
The longer they worked within the business, the more they realised the accommodation industry offered something many careers struggle to provide: flexibility, variety and the opportunity to create genuine connections with people.
"We thought we were helping out for a little while," Natalie reflects. "Then life happened. Before we knew it, we'd built a business, raised a family and created a lifestyle we genuinely loved."
Eventually, their commitment became official when they formally took ownership of the business. It was a significant decision, but one they have never regretted.
For Natalie and Michael, however, success was measured by far more than business performance.
While the motel provided financial stability, the greatest reward was the lifestyle it enabled. Being close to home meant they could be present for their children's lives in ways that many working parents cannot always achieve.
