NSW Embark on Tourism Roadmap

AUSTRALIA | NSW has embarked on a new tourism roadmap designed to boost the state's visitor economy and welcome more tourists to its cities and towns.

The nation’s peak accommodation body has welcomed the NSW Government’s new roadmap to turbocharge the state’s visitor economy.

Accommodation Australia CEO James Goodwin said the targets of 40,000 new hotel rooms, 8.5 million new airline seats, 150,000 more jobs and the aim to generate $91 billion in annual visitor expenditure by 2035 were bold, but achievable.

“This plan shows the Minns Labor government has listened to industry and is willing to invest in our sector,” said Goodwin.

“Sydney is a big international draw card, if we can bring more visitors here the rest of the state and the rest of the country benefits. This type of commitment is what we need to return to pre-pandemic visitor numbers and beyond,” he said.

Goodwin added that the strategy announcement included a commitment to developing a State-wide Aviation Strategy and expanding our calendar of major events.

“We have long advocated for the need for more flights into Sydney,” he said.

“And you only have to look at the huge benefits of Vivid, the recent British and Irish Lions tour and the Sydney Marathon to see that major events are essential to the visitor economy. We look forward to working with the NSW government to make these goals a reality.”

Following a comprehensive review and consultation with more than 500 NSW stakeholders, the new Strategy will guide cross-government and unlock industry collaboration and capital over the next decade.

The Strategy includes a new staged growth path, with targets of AUD 59 billion by 2026 and AUD 71 billion by 2030.

As part of the strategy announcement, the Minns Labor Government has committed to the development of a Statewide Aviation Strategy, expanding our calendar of major events and will investigate a new pathway to unlock major tourism investment in the State.

“NSW is home to some of the world’s most vibrant destinations, experiences and events, but we can’t afford to stand still. This Strategy is about taking bold, coordinated action to ensure we continue to lead the nation and compete on the global stage,” said NSW Premier Chris Minns.

“We’re backing our strengths and unlocking new opportunities across Sydney, Western Sydney and regional NSW. This Strategy charts a bold path to more jobs, stronger communities and a thriving visitor economy that benefits the people of NSW.”
