AUSTRALIA | Drifter has officially opened in Australia, welcoming guests to its new Byron Bay property, ahead of further expansion in the region.
Drifter has launched its first Australian property, Drifter Byron Bay marking the brand's official entry into the Australian market and the first Drifter brand opening since the successful launch of Drifter Christchurch in June 2024.
While the Drifter brand has had a presence in Australia via seven Little Drifter premium hostel properties across the country’s east coast, Drifter Byron Bay will be the first full Drifter Australian experience, a more elevated, design-led offering that blends the social energy of a hostel with the quality and amenity of a boutique hotel.
“Drifter Christchurch has been the proof point we needed to show that today’s traveller is seeking so much more than just a place to sleep, they want connection, experience and community,” said Drifter CEO Luke Moran.
“The response to what we’re doing with Drifter has been incredible and with Drifter Byron Bay, we’re building on that success, taking the blueprint from Christchurch and evolving it into something that’s just as thoughtful, social and just a straight up place to be. This opening is the next step in our journey to redefine what modern travel looks like for the free-spirited traveller, but there’s also so much more to come for Drifter in Australia, New Zealand and even further afield.”
Located moments from the beach in the heart of Byron Bay on Lateen Lane, the 52-room, 260-bed Drifter Byron Bay redefines Byron Bay accommodation with its unique blend of shared suites perfect for travellers and groups and private suites with curated amenity. All Drifter rooms have been thoughtfully designed to foster connection and cater for the free-spirited traveller. An impressive 49 of the 52 rooms have balconies, many of which face onto the property’s lush new rooftop pool area.

Drifter Co-Founder Hugh Stephenson said that, from the beginning, Drifter was about redefining the idea of accommodation so that it’s as memorable as the destination itself.
“To do this, Drifter properties elevate the accommodation experience into something design-led and experience-rich to facilitate connection with others,” said Stephenson.
“We’re not trying to be just another hotel or hostel, we’re creating a better version of both, and Byron Bay is the perfect place for that idea to thrive. It’s a destination already known for culture, music, surfing and wellness, and we’ve built a property in Drifter Byron Bay that mirrors that energy.”
With interior design and fit out spear headed by Drifter’s project design and delivery lead Larissa Fuller, Drifter Byron Bay sets a new bar for blended shared and private accommodation in Australia with its curated mix of art, local print photography, and curated communal spaces for guests to meet, mingle and get up to a mischief if they choose.
“Drifter Byron Bay redefines coastal design with a modern palette of sun-washed ochres, rusted maroons, and sea greens layered with eclectic global influences and art-driven communal spaces,” said Fuller.
“Our dramatic aqua-toned rooftop pool and expansive leisure deck is framed with lush tropical landscaping and is a striking architectural anchor for the property which offers tactile finishes, original artworks and sculptural details throughout the common areas and rooms.”
Centred around a seven-metre rooftop pool with a dedicated poolside DJ booth, Drifter also features the Revel Room, which is a communal space for dining, games and movie screenings, a social guest kitchen with individual guest dry and fridge storage, and an open reception with lounge and workspaces for the nomadic traveller.

Artist Beni Single, who is based between Japan and Mexico, was commissioned following his incredible work in Drifter Christchurch to paint an original large-scale mural inspired by David Hockney’s 1978 series of poolside artworks that snakes around the building, as well as multiple canvas works that are dotted throughout the hotel.
Like all Drifter and Little Drifter venues, Drifter Byron Bay offers an extensive program of free experiences designed to bring guests together, including Disco Drifter, a family-style meal put on by the Drifter team called The Cook Up, and the Drifter Fit Check with rotating group wellbeing activities, including a run club and beachside yoga.
Accommodation-wise, guests can choose from a variety of accommodation options, from superior rooms with four, six, eight, and 10-shared suites, female-only and ensuite shared suites, private twin, queen, and superior queen ensuite rooms, and a private king penthouse suite, called the Nirvana Suite, designed to offer elevated luxury.
Each room is thoughtfully designed with aesthetics and practicality in mind, with signature Drifter bunks in shared rooms offering privacy curtains, individual power outlets, lighting, and lockable storage.
Drifter Byron Bay is part of Drifter’s growing network of eleven properties across Australia and New Zealand, including its flagship Drifter Christchurch hybrid hotel, and Little Drifter hostel venues in Sydney’s Bondi Beach, Surry Hills and Glebe, Canberra, Melbourne CBD and North Melbourne. Drifter Melbourne, Drifter Wellington, and Drifter Auckland will launch in 2026.
