Christchurch luxury resort, Hotel Montreal, said the trend for couples taking the time to get away and reconnect has been huge.

Hotel Montreal has observed a surge in couples seeking meaningful reconnection getaways.

"We're seeing a powerful trend of couples who've lost touch amid packed schedules," said Thomas Patterson, Director at Hotel Montreal in Christchurch.

"What begins as a luxury accommodation booking often transforms into something valuable: genuine reconnection. Our spaces bring couples back into conversation, whether sharing breakfast on a balcony or unwinding by the fire."

According to Tourism New Zealand data, 78 percent of domestic travellers cite "opportunity to reconnect with my partner" as a primary motivation for booking romantic accommodation.

Located on Montreal Street just north of Cranmer Square, the five-star boutique hotel creates an environment where couples naturally turn toward each other, away from screens and deadlines. The courtyard's cosy fire becomes a catalyst for conversation, while suite layouts and Egyptian cotton linen foster eye contact and relaxation.

The Montreal Bar & Restaurant has become a cornerstone of this reconnection experience. Its intimate setting creates a convivial environment for couples to connect over shared tapas platters that are also popular for anniversaries and milestone birthday drinks.

"What we're really offering is time and space," explained Patterson.

"Couples arrive slightly out of sync, often looking at phones rather than each other. By the second day, there's a visible shift. They're laughing together, making eye contact and actually listening."

Winter at Hotel Montreal naturally facilitates reconnection. Suites are designed as conversation spaces, with seating arranged for face-to-face interaction. The hotel's proximity to Hagley Park provides an opportunity for side-by-side walks where stress melts away.

"Relationships need maintenance, just like anything valuable," Patterson added.

"What we're witnessing is couples recognising the importance of investing in their connection. One guest told me they'd had their first real conversation in months while sitting by our fire, about dreams, concerns, and plans. They checked out looking more aligned, more attuned to each other."
