RISING RATES MAY PUT SMALL OPERATORS OUT OF BUSINESS

Hotel and motel operators are up in arms over Whangarei District Council’s (WDC) proposal to raise their rates by an average of 73 percent. The move threatens to force many small operators in the area to go out of business.

The rising accommodation rates are part of WDC’s Long Term Plan, and the council is now taking submissions from the public. Accommodation operators have been notified just one week before the proposed changes will be discussed by the council, a time frame many operators believe is not long enough to prepare for. WDC will reach a final decision on the matter on June 28th.
