Thirty years since Sunshine Coast last had a new five-star hotel developed, Australian architectural firm Hassell has been appointed to design the $900 million Westin Coolum Spa and Resort project.

Hiding away in Yaroomba Beach, Westin Coolum Spa and Resort will create 3,400 jobs during its construction, and a further 1,400 jobs once it's operating.

The five-star hotel will host 220-rooms, a luxury day spa, two signature restaurants, a 50-metre guest resort pool and conference event facilities for social and business gatherings of up to 800 people. It will be adjoined by 148 short-stay serviced apartments designed to be a part of The Westin brand.

Hassell is a multidisciplinary design company with studios in Australia, China, South East Asia, the United Kingdom and the United States. They have previously worked on major hotel projects like The Club Hotel Singapore and Queensbridge Tower Hotel and Luxury Residence in Melbourne.
