A Northland development group is pushing to get a $200 million, four-star, 130-room hotel off the ground on the Whangarei waterfront.

If all goes according to plan, Northland Development Corporation believes construction on the site will begin before the end of the year.

An unnamed major hotel chain has already been confirmed to run the hotel. The company also plans to run a large conference centre on the site which could host up to 1000 people.

Built on 12,460 sqm of waterfront land, the project promises to employ 200 people during construction and a further 140 to 160 during development.
