Resource consents have been filed for a new resort hotel in Whitianga. The hotel’s plans include 80 rooms on land and another 26 over the water, as well as a conference room for over 150 people.
Previously, plans had been lodged for a fast-food outlet to be built on the location. However, local opinion was split on the matter, with some residents arguing it would destroy the character of the town.
Locals appeared to be receiving the hotel plans more warmly than the fast-food shop, believing a resort would contribute positively to the town’s atmosphere, and attract more people into Whitianga, bringing more jobs and money into the town.
