STRIKES SPREAD TO HAWAII

Over 2,700 Marriott employees in Hawaii have joined the hotel strike action which has now spread across North America. Across four major Hawaiian properties including The Royal Hawaiian Hotel, the strike has now spread across eight areas from 23 hotels, including Boston, San Francisco, San Jose, Oakland, San Diego and Detroit.

Unite Here 5, the union leading the strike said that more than 12,000 Marriott employees in the US are working on expired contracts, affecting about 3,500 workers. The Hawaiian hotel workers earn $22, which they said is not enough to survive in Hawaii, and as a resolution, they want a ten-dollar raise. The living wage in Hawaii for an adult is $16.03 and the minimum wage set at $10.10.
