An independent commissioner has decided Greymouth’s historic Revingtons Hotel should be demolished.
The owners now have permission to demolish the building after it was deemed to be dangerous and unsanitary by the Grey District Council, and the commissioner said it would be extremely difficult to renovate the hotel in its current state.
The hotel and its adjacent Waitaki House, which is also set to be demolished, have been listed as category 2 heritage items by the Grey District Council and Heritage New Zealand.
Constructed in 1937, Revingtons Hotel has been closed since 2013 when it was sold and then ran into a series of problems. It has been occupied by squatters and vandals have caused approximately $200,000 worth of damage and theft.
