Heineken Repurposes Leftover Barley into Stylish Furniture

Commissioned by Heineken, Spanish architect and designer Omayra Maymó designed a four-tiered plinth made with leftover barley waste. The barley waste is what is left after providing the flavour in the brewing process.

Created by combining the barley waste with cement, this sustainable upcycled pedestal consists of a series of stacked brick-like forms. This material combination gives a lighter-than-usual type of cement that reduces the carbon emissions associated with traditional cement manufacturing processes.

The lightweight glass tiers break up the design and give the unit a functional purpose.
