Pampered Pets at Hilton Lake Taupo

Pampered pooches will be given five-star treatment at one of New Zealand's most luxurious hotels with its new packages for pets.

Built in 1889, The Hilton Taupo will open its doors to guests both two and four-legged with a Puppy Playcation package.

While pet owners can enjoy some rest and relaxation, the red carpet has also been rolled out for their furry friends, who can lap up a little luxury themselves.

Man's best friend will be able to put their paws up in a dog-friendly room, complete with a dog bed, food, water bowls and a special doggie treat. Along with complimentary doggie bags, other features include a guide to pet-friendly cafes, activities and walks.

Special considerations have also been applied to bathroom facilities, with a private area for dogs to utilise when nature calls.

Hilton Lake Taupo general manager Tracey Poole says while pet-cations are common overseas, there is little available at the high end of the New Zealand accommodation market.

She says the new pet-friendly offering will cater to those within driving distance whose fur babies want to tag along.

Taupo is a very dog-friendly destination with lots of walks and cafes, but there are only a handful of accommodations providers that offer pet-friendly options, and Hilton wanted to offer that, said Poole.

To ensure the comfort and safety of all guests, Poole says there is a detailed policy in place for dog owners, which includes dog weight restrictions, no more than two per room, and rules to adhere to.

For the pups not entirely up to par with the rules and regulations of a five-star stay, a $200 refundable service fee will be held upon check-in to cover any damage or additional cleaning required.

Prices for the limited number of dedicated pet-friendly rooms start from $360.
