The Landing has been recognised for its two decades of kaitiakitanga of a heritage site in the Bay of Islands, winning The Tourism Industry Aotearoa’s 2022 Conservation Award. The annual New Zealand Tourism Awards 2022 celebrate success within the industry, recognising environmental protection work done by individual and larger businesses.

“We are delighted to see the work of The Landing team and many other recognised,” Garth Solly commented, Director of Hospitality. “The Landing is a special palace, and we take great pride and care in being the custodians of its landscape, history, and wildlife. Our sustainability practises are key to protecting and preserving The Landing’s unique qualities and community for the past 20 years and far into the future.”

The Conservation Award, by the Department of Conservation, acknowledges the environmentally sustainable work done by tourism businesses, those by which embrace kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and the protection of our natural and cultural resources.

The Landing is a coastal property within the Bay of Islands with guest accommodations, a sustainable vineyard, a winery, and a tasting room. Founded in 1999, The Landing has always envisioned preserving, restoring and developing land with significant historical, cultural, and environmental value. Where locals and travellers go to experience such elements, the Bay of Islands is quintessential to New Zealand.

The biodiversity and natural beauty surrounding the venue combine European and Maori cultures, forming those who have been before us. The Landing continues to preserve these valuable aspects of the Bay of Islands for future generations. Part of this preservation is the long-term reforestation project which has resulted in more than 1.25 million native trees being planted at The Landing. An additional 15,000 trees have been given away in Auckland over the three years to be planted in suburban areas.

By their care and honour of cultural histories and sustainable practise, The Landing take home the Conservation Award with pride and will continue with their inspiring work for their heritage and the future.
