Due to overwhelming demand, Delta Airlines has announced it is limiting access to its airport lounges.
From 2023, Delta will increase the prices and requirements to obtain entry into its Sky Club lounges.
Annual memberships will only be available to travellers who have reached frequent-flyer status, which constitutes four Medallion levels that range from silver to diamond. Previously, memberships were available to any passenger.
Fees for individual and executive memberships will also increase to reduce demand.
Even if a traveller holds a membership, access to the lounge will not be granted if they hold a Basic Economy fare, unless they have an eligible credit card.
Its plans to "preserve a best-in-class experience" came after complaints from travellers about long lines and crowds at some Sky Clubs. The huge boost in demand for Delta's lounges has been caused by credit card deals, increasing numbers of lounge memberships and overall higher demand for domestic and international travel.
Sky Club lounges offer complimentary drinks and food, Wi-Fi and workspaces, allowing travellers to wait for their flight away from the larger crowds at the gate.
Senior Vice President of Customer Engagement and Loyalty of Delta, Dwight James, said that delivering an industry-leading experience is paramount for Delta.
"While we're thrilled to see so many customers enjoy the fruits of our teams' hard work, our goal now is to balance the popularity of the Clubs with the premium service and atmosphere for which they were designed - and that our guests deserve".
