KiwiRail Announce New TranzAlpine Service

KiwiRail is now operating a new Scenic Plus journey on its TranzAlpine service, allowing travellers to experience the natural landscapes of the South Island.

KiwiRail’s general manager of scenic journeys, Tracey Goodall said that the new service will take rail tourism to a new level.

“This summer we have introduced new short break packages and guided tours travelling on our three scenic train journeys, and now we are further elevating our tourism offering with Scenic Plus, starting initially on the TranzAlpine route.”

The TranzAlpine route follows the foothills of the Southern Alps, and ventures onwards to the rugged West Coast. There is a dedicated passenger carriage, as well as a viewing carriage to experience integrated with local stories and insights.

“People will still be able to book standard TranzAlpine tickets, however, Scenic Plus offers international and domestic travellers a more boutique and personalised experience.”

A new kitchen car has been added to provide regionally inspired meals, and complimented by local wines and beers. The carriage has been a $24 million investment through the Government’s Provincial Growth Fund. The fund has also provided the platform at Greymouth station to be extended and for the completion of new, premium Scenic Plus passenger carriages.

There is a growing international market for rail tourism, and an emphasised demand for high-quality products. Goodall considers this to be the best time for KiwiRail to launch the service.

“There is a major growing international market for rail tourism with a demand for high-quality products. With New Zealand borders now fully reopened, we are excited to relaunch the premium Scenic Plus offering and deliver a personalised, regionally inspired cuisine experience to our travellers.”

The Scenic Plus grade will offer a personalised and dedicated host service, regionally inspired cuisine, and a private outdoor viewing carriage among other benefits.

The first service will debut on 14 April 2023.
