MIÚCHA - THE VOICE OF BOSSA NOVA

Sky Arts – Saturday 20 May, 8.30pm

Miúcha - The Voice of Bossa Nova is the feminist perspective on the history of Bossa Nova, told through home made movies, diaries, letters and personal recordings of Miúcha and João Gilberto. The film covers the 20 year span from 1962-1982, Miúcha’s struggle to become a singer and her turbulent marriage with João Gilberto.

 

ADNAN SYED: OVERTURNED

ID – Thursday 20 May, 9.30pm

It seemed like a done deal when 17-year old Adnan Syed was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999 and thrown into jail for the rest of his life. Maintaining his innocence all the way, Syed languished in prison for 15 years until This American Life journalist Sarah Koenig raised questions that brought his case back to life. Through never-before-seen interviews with both experts and key players directly involved in the case, this one-hour special examines the fascinating new information that could either grant Syed a new trial, or keep him behind bars for good.

 

DOLLY PARTON STORY: FROM RAGS TO RICHES

Dolly Parton is one of the most iconic singer-songwriters of all time - having won numerous prestigious awards for her emotional writing that strikes at the very heart of what it is to be human. From her humble beginnings - one of 12 children living in a shack in Tennessee - Dolly has not only conquered the Country music scene but made her mark on the entertainment industry.

 

THE HISTORY OF MOSSAD

History – Wednesdays from 24 May, 7.30pm

Mossad, the Israeli foreign intelligence agency, was founded on 13 December 1949. It was supposed to guarantee the existence of Israel — the small country wanted to become a safe haven for Jews from all over the world. Mossad is considered to be a life insurance against a second Holocaust. And its agents not only obtain information, but also have a licence to kill. Israel’s threats repeatedly drove Mossad into daring operations that were difficult to hide from the public. Hardly any other secret service came out of its shadow world as often as Mossad. The Israeli administration does not confirm or deny anything. The many legends surrounding the notorious foreign intelligence service are meant to make an impression, especially in the Muslim world — and to deter Israel’s enemies.

 

GOLD, LIES & VIDEOTAPE

Discovery – Thursdays from 25 May, 8.30pm

In the 1930s the Noss Family discovered what could be the largest treasure hoard of the American Southwest, located in New Mexico. Now, with the Department of Defense they’ll uncover hundreds of hours of film photographs. This series explores the mystery surrounding one of the biggest treasures uncovered in Victorio Peak in southern New Mexico. In 1937 Doc Noss uncovered a cavernous peak allegedly housing almost $3 billion worth of gold bars and historical artefacts, but despite various expeditions to Victorio Falls no treasure has ever been recovered.

CHUCKY (S2)

Chucky is back! The notorious killer doll continues his onslaught of terror in Season 2 of the hit horror series from franchise creator Don Mancini. This second season finds Chucky hellbent on exacting revenge against teens Jake, Devon and Lexy, as well as his ex Tiffany, after they successfully thwarted his murderous plot in Season One. While Jake and Devon encounter trouble as a couple at their new Catholic school, Chucky embarks on a whole new killing spree, crossing paths with familiar franchise faces along the way.

 

BIG BOOK CLUB (S4)

Sky Arts – Mondays from 22 May, 8.30pm

Writer and host, Damian Barr, will be joined by three guests together in the studio, each with a great story to tell and stories to share. Guests will range from authors with a new fiction, non-fiction book or memoir to well-known book lovers talking about the books that changed their life and the writers they are most passionate about. In addition to studio guests, The Big Book Club will head out and about to speak to book lovers across Scotland. Readers will be invited to give a book review of a classic title, and each week, the show visits a different village or town and challenges three residents to tell viewers in 45 seconds about their bucket-list book on a new theme each week.

MYTHS - THE GREATEST MYSTERIES OF HUMANITY (S2)

History – Tuesdays from 23 May, 8.30pm

The series follows scientists and hobby researchers alike. Archaeologists uncover ancient graves and go on underwater expeditions. The traces lead to ancient Egypt, to Attila, the barbaric king of the Huns or straight in the middle of the infamous Bermuda Triangle. From biblical stories to historical figures and modern urban legends. Where is the legendary Holy Grail located? Did the fabled Atlantis really exist? And are werewolves only pure fantasy creatures? This thrilling documentary series offers space for speculation, for unusual theories as well as for scientific findings. Episodes include The Curse of the Pharaoh, Atlantis, The Flood, Ghosts and Spectres and Werewolves.

The Equalizer continues to pack a powerful punch as the hit drama series kicks off its third season. Queen Latifah stars as Robyn McCall, a seemingly average single mom who uses her skills as a former CIA operative to secretly aid those in desperate need of help. Robyn pursues justice alongside former sniper Mel Bayani, hacker Harry Keshegian, and NYPD detective Marcus Dante. In season three, the lines between Robyn’s vigilante work and family have blurred more than ever now that her daughter Delilah and Aunt Vi have discovered her secret career. In the wake of Robyn’s abduction, those closest to her must join forces for the first time in order to rescue her.

After usurping Alvarez, EZ embraces his position as leader of the Santo Padre chapter. The Mayans have battled for respect, territory, and power, but in the show’s final season, they’ll face internal fractures and an all-out war with the Sons of Anarchy.

As life in Britain’s cities becomes increasingly perilous, three evacuee children – Lily, Pattie and Ted Watts – are sent by their mother from Salford to the Yorkshire village of Oakworth. There to meet them on the train station platform are Bobbie Waterbury, her daughter, Annie, and grandson Thomas, and with their help the evacuees are soon settling into their new life in the countryside. When the children discover injured American soldier Abe, hiding out in the railyard at Oakworth Station, they are thrust into a dangerous quest to assist their new friend who, like them, is a long way from home.

Narrated by Margot Robbie, exposing the often-secret lives of an eclectic group of women across Australia, Under Cover shines a light on the devastating reality that women over fifty are the fastest growing cohort experiencing homelessness in the country. Their moving but optimistic portraits reveal the struggles these women face, and lay bare the flaws in our society, as well as our economic fragility in the modern world.
