Solar Eclipse Drives Demand

U.S.A. | Choice Hotels International, Inc. has over 400 hotels in the path of the total solar eclipse on April 8 that are being booked at an increased rate of 800 percent compared to the same date last year. The total eclipse will be visible along a narrow track stretching from Texas to Maine. More than 20 percent of American travellers said they were likely to take a trip to experience next month's total eclipse.

According to NASA, the path of the eclipse will start in Mexico and will enter the United States via Texas. The eclipse will travel through the states of OklahomaArkansasMissouriIllinoisKentuckyIndianaOhioPennsylvaniaNew YorkVermontNew Hampshire, and Maine. Parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse. The eclipse will then go into Canada through Southern OntarioQuebecNew BrunswickPrince Edward IslandCape Breton, and exits through Newfoundland.

In 2017, the Total Eclipse of August 21st saw hotel room prices surge as demand grew. Rooms averaged at USD $1,500 a night, whilst a single spot at eclipse watch parties cost a near average of USD $120. US domestic travellers are expected to make up the highest amount of tourists to see the eclipse, especially from west coast states like California, Nevada, and Oregan.

With over 7,500 hotels in its portfolio, approximately 90 percent of Choice's properties in the U.S. are in suburban, interstate, and small-town locations. Nearly 30 percent are located near popular destinations, including beaches and national parks, and 76 percent are located within one mile of a highway entrance.
