The New Zealand Government has endorsed a strategic business plan presented by the Tourism Data Leadership Group.
The Tourism Data Leadership Group (TDLG) has released its Strategic Business Plan 2024 to 2025, which provided the New Zealand Government with a blueprint for the immediate future of the tourism data system.
The Plan provides a clear roadmap for how the full NZD five million of the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) committed to improving the tourism data system is to be spent. The Minister for Tourism and Hospitality has endorsed the plan.
The Plan primarily focuses on investing in foundational data gaps and working towards setting up appropriate oversight and stable funding. These actions will contribute towards the TDLG’s vision of a world-class tourism data system and will be largely implemented by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE).
In producing the Plan, the TDLG anticipate the improvements it has recommended will contribute to a range of longer-term outcomes. This includes thriving regions, in which there is good social licence for tourism, and consideration of environmental constraints.
The finalised Plan considered feedback following the consultation on a draft version in early 2024. Nineteen submissions were received from a range of stakeholders across the tourism data system.
The Government will move forward with recommendations from the Tourism Data Leadership Group, including establishing a new Tourism Data Partnership Fund.
The Tourism Data Partnership Fund (TDPF) is one of a range of initiatives set to improve the tourism data system and support the growth of the tourism sector that are being funded through the existing International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) allocation of $5 million.
The Fund will provide up to NZD 400,000 in grants to tourism and hospitality industry bodies co-funded initiatives that will contribute towards a more productive and environmentally astute tourism and hospitality sector.
The TDPF will open on 22 July 2024 with successful applicants expected to be announced late September 2024.
