Japan Airlines Expands Fleet

Japan Airlines

JAPAN | Japan Airlines has signed a purchase agreement with The Boeing Company to expand its commercial fleet.

Japan Airlines has placed a firm order of 10 additional Boeing 787-9 aircraft, with an possibility for 10 more. This has followed JAL's announcement in march regarding the introduction of these aircraft.

JAL Group already operates over 50 Boeing 787 series aircraft, and with the introduction of these additional aircraft, the airline has aimed to enhance and expand the capacity of its international operations, focusing primarily on regions such as North America, Asia, and India, where future growth is expected.

The introduction of these aircraft is planned over a period of approximately four years, starting in 2028. By 2030, JAL aims to expand and grow its international network, increasing the combined supply capacity of both full-service carriers and low-cost carriers (LCCs). This will be achieved by accelerating the introduction of modern, fuel-efficient aircraft, thereby enhancing the quality of inflight services and providing the highest level of service to our customers while further reducing CO2 emissions.

“We are delighted to announce the addition of 787 Dreamliners to our fleet. This order underscores our commitment to accelerating the introduction of modern, fuel-efficient aircraft to deliver unparalleled service to our customers and further reduce CO2 emissions,” said Yukio Nakagawa, JAL Executive Officer of Procurement.

“We greatly appreciate the strong relationship and support from Boeing, which has been instrumental in our efforts to modernise our fleet and expand our international routes”

Brad McMullen, Boeing senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, said Japan Airlines has continued to be a global ambassador for the 787 Dreamliner and this latest order is a testament to the versatility and efficiency of the 787-9 for the airline’s key long-haul routes.

“We value our long-standing partnership with Japan Airlines and are pleased that they have re-selected the 787 Dreamliner as they continue to modernise their world-class fleet,” said McMullen.

The JAL Group will continue its efforts to balance providing a comfortable travel experience for our customers with reducing environmental impact, aiming to become the world's most preferred and valued airline group.
