AVERAGE TOURIST SPENDS $4665 IN NEW ZEALAND

The average visitor to New Zealand spends $4665 during their trip, according to new figures sourced from the World Tourism Organisation.

The figure places New Zealand fourth in the global rankings when it comes to individual tourist spending, behind Australia, Luxembourg, and Lebanon.

The top 10 countries were:

  • Australia - $7634.98
  • Luxembourg - $6970.21
  • Lebanon - $6610.29
  • New Zealand - $4665.16
  • USA - $4417.35
  • Qatar- $4269.84
  • Panama - $3896.16
  • Macau - $3325.80
  • Sweden - $3321.86
  • The Maldives - $3182.22

Other popular destinations with relatively high spending per tourist were India ($2815), Thailand ($2598), and the United Kingdom ($2173).

New Zealand's inclusion on the list, along with Australia's, is likely down to the two countries' relative isolation, meaning tourists who make the effort to visit are likely to stay longer and invest more into their experience.

The figures, released by Globehunters, exclude countries which receive less than 1,000,000 visitors per year, or have not reported their visitor numbers since 2016.
