NEW HOTEL PLANNED ON TREATY GROUNDS

The Waitangi National Trust plans to build a big international hotel overlooking the Waitangi Treaty House.

The Trust’s estate comprises more than 500 hectares of land, including the Treaty Grounds, which already has a hotel and golf course on its property.

The hotel is envisioned to be a high-end resort, built adjacent to the first holes of the Waitangi Golf Course.

Golfers hesitant about the hotel, as it may raise the cost of the green fees and obstruct the view of the surrounding Bay of Islands.

Waitangi National Trust chief executive Greg McManus said there are no firm plans yet and consultation with the local community will happen before the project begins. “We have a concept of a site but it is all very high level, and nothing is confirmed," McManus said.
