Permits for a hotel development in Mexico have been denied because environmental authorities deemed the project would be too close to nesting turtles.
With 520 rooms the hotel project would have involved constructing 23 new buildings and an artificial lake.
However, the federal Environment Department belied that the project would threaten Xcacel beach, one of Mexico’s most significant sea turtle nesting locations.
“We denied the authorisation to the La Calma Ecoresort Luxury project, which sought to be located in an area adjacent to the Bay of Xcacel-Xcacelito, in Tulum, to consider that it affects the reproduction of sea turtles in the zone,” said the Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) in a statement on Twitter.
