REPURPOSING USED SOAP AT CORDIS AUCKLAND

Cordis Auckland used soap bars.

As of September, used soap bars from Cordis Auckland have been recycled and repurposed for communities in need. Every time a guest checks out of their room, the leftover bar of soap is collected for recycling by Beyond Skin Deep (BSD) who treat the waste soap before crushing and filtering it.

Cordis Auckland was the first hotel in New Zealand to partner with Beyond Skin Deep, starting the partnership in July. Already a total of 135kg of recycled soap collected from 411 hotel guest rooms and suites from the end of August through September has been used to make the first batch of 'recycled soap.'

“Each year, the hospitality industry discards tonnes of used soap and it usually ends up in a landfill as waste, when it actually could be re-purposed and given a second life,” said Franz Mascarenhas, managing director, Cordis Auckland.

“We are very excited to have signed on in July to this programme with BSD, and that these soaps can be sent to a community in need, to help promote hygiene and arrest the spread of disease.

The repurposed soap is distributed by a charitable organisation called the 'Rapid Relief Team' in North and South America, Canada, the Caribbean, New Zealand, Australia, the UK and Europe where it is taken to the communities who need it the most.
