Guests nights cooled down in January

Guest nights in New Zealand usually peak in January. In January 2019, the total amount of guest nights in hotels, motels and backpackers was stagnant compared to the year before.

“January months often see New Zealanders making the most of the good weather and summer holiday break from work and school,” said Melissa McKenzie, accommodation and construction statistics manager, Statistics New Zealand.

McKenzie suggested that Airbnb, camping, and holiday houses may be at fault for the plateau.

“Flat guest nights this January may reflect increased popularity in other types of accommodation.”

Overall, international guests spent fewer nights in backpackers and holiday parks, and domestic visitors spent more time in short-term accommodation.
