Dunedin heritage building set for boutique hotel makeover

Allbell Chambers historic building

Plans have been laid out for a new boutique hotel development inside a heritage building in central Dunedin.

Flat Iron Investments Ltd has proposed a new hotel inside the historic city centre Allbell Chambers building, found inside a consent application made to the Dunedin City Council.

The plan shows the hotel will have no reception area as guests will pay for their rooms online and access their rooms with a PIN.

The hotel will have 11 rooms on the first floor and 13 on the second.

The building will get a new lift and stairwell and a new roof, with a guest lounge/library also to be developed.

Constructed in 1909/10 on Stuart Street, the building is listed by Heritage New Zealand as a category two historic place.

Flat Iron Investments bought the property in 2010. At the time of purchase, the building contained the Two Chefs restaurant and other retail and office spaces.
