Michelin Guide Introduces Hotel Programme

Michelin Guide

Having adjudicated restaurants around the world for almost 100 years, the Michelin guide has introduced a new branch to its internationally renowned star programme. Michelin Keys has been established to highlight exceptional hotel and travel experiences, which will be implemented from 2024 onwards.

“The Michelin Key is a clear, reliable indication for travellers. Just as the Michelin Star distinguishes those restaurants at the peak of their art, the Michelin Key recognises the most exceptional hotels worldwide. It is also an acknowledgment of the teamwork of committed, enthusiastic hospitality professionals,” said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide.

The concept was first pitched four years ago, and just as it would with restaurants, the Michelin guide has intended to independently recommend establishments that constitute true destinations. The guide has the overall aim to improve the service of travellers, and to support them in their search for personalised experiences.

The criteria are based on five points:

  • A destination unto itself: the hotel contributes to the local experience
  • Excellence in architecture and interior design
  • Quality and regularity of service, comfort and maintenance
  • Singularity reflecting the personality of the establishment, its unique character
  • Consistency between the quality of the experience and the price paid

With its selection, developed independently of existing labels and without pre-established quotas, the Michelin Guide has three objectives:

  • Guide travellers to boutique accommodations that offer much more than a room for a night
  • Precede or extend a gastronomic outing with a memorable hotel stay
  • Allow travellers to choose, book and comment on their stay on a single independent platform

Each year, the Michelin Key will distinguish exceptional establishments led by teams with unique forms of knowledge. The Michelin Key will be awarded following one or several stays conducted anonymously by The Michelin Guide selection teams.
