ASBESTOS FORCES PARTIAL CLOSING OF HOTEL

Hermitage Hotel Mt Cook

After detecting asbestos in some of its facilities, Hermitage Hotel has temporarily partially shut down.

As a precaution, the ground floor, activities desk, and Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre will all be closed until June 28.

Asbestos was discovered while renovating the hotel’s Alpine Snowline Bar and Panorama Room.

"After the removal of some known asbestos in the Snowline Bar area, we found some evidence of asbestos beyond the Snowline Bar area. This necessitated us to take the precautionary response of closing the area to complete further removal and subsequent testing. We have been following WorkSafe guidelines since then to facilitate the removal," Chairman of Aoraki Mt Cook Alpine Village Ltd, Sir John Davies, said.

Due to these changes, the hotel’s reception will be operating from the back of the hotel at the Aoraki Lobby, while the food and beverage offerings will be running from the Chamois Bar and Grill.
