Global technology company, Travelport, released trend data today highlighting the resurgence of outbound travel from mainland China. Outbound flight bookings from mainland China have increased by 331 percent in comparison to this time last year.
Outbound flight bookings increased by 247 percent on 27 December 2022 when the Chinese government announced the end of mandatory quarantine for returning travellers when compared to the same day the previous month.
Four of the top five outbound destinations from mainland China are within Asia, Hong Kong tops the list, followed by Macau, Thailand, the United States and South Korea, respectively, according to a recent McKinsey survey. The popularity of closer destinations can likely be attributed to an increase in travellers taking shorter trips of less than ten days.
Chinese Labour Day (May 1) travel has reached a three year high, when compared to the same dates last year, bookings have increased by 470 percent. Additionally, unlike the rest of the year, this period sees a spike in trips longer than ten days and long haul destinations such as Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States proving popular.
