Virgin Australia has officially commenced the highly anticipated service from Cairns to Tokyo. The launch was in partnership with the Queensland State Government and Cairns Airport, through the state government’s Attracting Aviation Investment Fund.
The daily service has added a further 2,000 seats for travellers to fly between both cities, as well as other same-day services linking Cairns with other Australian locations.
Velocity Frequent Flyer CEO and Japan Services Representative, Nick Rohrlach said the launch of the Cairns-Haneda service marks an exciting milestone for Virgin Australia as it continues to grow its international network and provide more value and choice to Australians.
“Today marks the start of our highly anticipated services to Haneda, Tokyo, which means Australian travellers will benefit from greater value and choice when flying to Japan as we expand our international footprint,” he said.
Rohrlach said that it was common knowledge that Cairns is a popular destination for Japanese travellers to Australia, and that unlocking the new service will boost tourism in the area. He added that the in-flight service will also embrace both Japanese and Australian culture through its menu for food and beverages.
“Creating wonderful travel experiences starts in the air, and we are excited to bring a little slice of Tokyo to life on board for our guests, whether that is building excitement before they touch down or to mark the unforgettable trip they don’t want to end.”
The first flight came as Virgin Australia’s first delivery of the new Boeing 737-8 fuel fleet arrived from Seattle.
